Opinion: Ke$ha's Impact on Rape Culture

By Patrick Holmes on February 29, 2016

There is a consistent aura of rape culture in the United States. It’s frustrating to see so many people speak out about the issues surrounding rape but there’s little done about the issue. No one is taking initiative and the one’s who want to, don’t have a strong enough voice to start the movement. There are leaders who can make a difference yet they choose to be silent.

There are constant headlines swarming papers across the U.S. and other countries that portray the action of rape or abuse against women. There are a multitude of stories a day of these violent actions. My only question is: when will it stop?

We have the resources, we have the statistics, we have the ability to help. But what use is that if there is no one willing to make a difference?

For instance, Kesha has been in news headlines for her court battle against her producer, Dr. Luke. She filed claims of rape and abuse against him for the amount of time he has been her producer. Regardless of anyone’s opinion of Kesha and her image, the only logical and genuine thing to do is believe her.

Every 107 seconds, a sexual assault occurs, according to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network. Furthermore, 68 percent of sexual assaults are not reported. Baffling numbers.

On a national level, these numbers are staggering. Is there anything preventing these numbers from increasing? Or even helping them decrease? There are people and organizations set in place to help this cause and to prevent any sort of sexual assault or abuse to happen. But there’s a bigger picture that needs to be taken into account.

The U.S. is a society with classes: Upper, middle, and lower. More often than not, the lower classes have less power and silenced yet, they are the ones who speak out about these issues and try to make a difference. The delegation of the people who speak out needs to be brought into the upper class and the people who have the ability, and prominence, to create a change.

Kesha’s case is something not often seen in main stream media. Prominent figures do not often speak out about issues such as rape and the culture that surrounds it. That being said, do you really think she would lie about being raped and abused?

I stand with Kesha and all the other women and men out there who have been raped and abused.
